Kouyate
The Commodore 64 is about to get a brand‐new RPG — and it’s got classic Ultima written all over it.
It’s called Kouyate, and it’s the latest passion project from Sarah Jane Avory, the dev behind Zeta Wing, Zeta Wing II, and the Briley Witch Chronicles series. She’s been wanting to make a proper Ultima‐style game for the C64 for years, and now it’s finally happening.
She’s not doing it alone, either — graphics are by @mementomoree.bsky.social, music by @nordischsound, and Sarah’s built her own custom toolchain to bring everything to life on real hardware.
The first tease of Kouyate popped up on her YouTube channel around November 2024, just after Briley Witch Chronicles 2 dropped. Since then, she’s been steadily posting updates — including recent footage showing off a full questline with an impassable mountain, a mysterious old lady, an underground dungeon with a lost brooch, and even a pirate village complete with sailing mechanics.
Looks like we’re in for something special. Keep an eye on this one — it’s shaping up to be a must‐have for any serious C64 collection.
